Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has long been celebrated for his business acumen that is yet unmatched throughout the continent. As the owner of the Dangote Group, his empire spans cement, sugar, flour, and the continent’s largest oil refinery.
Yet, a recent tragic event has brought questions of corporate responsibility into sharp focus.
With a net worth estimated between US $24 billion and US $29 billion in 2025, wealth without responsibility, is no wealth. The “Richest Man in Africa” title has gone on so long, everyone has forgotten to look under the hood.
The Tragic Accident
On August 13, 2025, Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of popular BBNaija winner Phyna, was struck by a Dangote Group cement truck near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, shortly after her graduation.
Reports suggest that the truck driver may have been underage and unlicensed, raising concerns about hiring protocols and adherence to safety standards. Ruth suffered severe injuries, including leg trauma that initially led to amputation.
The incident ignited widespread public outrage, particularly given the status of Dangote’s company and the perceived negligence that allowed an unlicensed driver behind the wheel of a heavy truck.
Dangote Response
Dangote Group initially promised comprehensive medical support, including flying Ruth abroad for advanced treatment and providing compensation.
However, in subsequent weeks, Phyna accused the company of backtracking on its promises and violating her sister’s privacy by posting hospital photos without consent.
Despite efforts to secure advanced medical care, Ruth tragically passed away on August 31, 2025.
Wealth and Responsibility
The stark contrast between Dangote’s immense wealth and the circumstances of Ruth’s accident has sparked debate on corporate accountability.
With billions at his disposal, critics argue that ensuring the safety of employees and the public should not be negotiable. The tragedy highlights broader concerns about workplace safety, proper training, and stringent compliance measures in large corporations.
While Dangote’s financial achievements are undeniable, the incident underscores the moral and ethical responsibilities that accompany immense wealth and influence.
Corporate policies, especially in industries involving heavy machinery and transport, must prioritize human life and safety above all else. The death of Ruth Otabor is a painful reminder that wealth alone does not absolve companies from their obligations to the public and their own employees.
