At the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, President Bola Tinubu called for a reassessment of global governance frameworks. He argues that financial systems, and healthcare structures need to ensure greater fairness and inclusion for low-income and emerging economies, particularly in Africa.

Tinubu highlighted critical challenges such as environmental degradation, the climate crisis, and healthcare inequalities as major obstacles to economic growth and urged the Global South to prioritize these issues.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for BRICS’ commitment to collective, equitable global development. Nigeria became the ninth BRICS partner country in January 2025, reflecting its growing role in South-South cooperation and global governance reform.

Tinubu also stressed the need for justice through sustainable technology transfer and accessible financing. He emphasized Africa’s minimal contribution to global emissions yet disproportionate suffering from climate impacts.

He cited initiatives like the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall as examples of Africa’s leadership in climate action.

President Tinubu also underscored the importance of addressing non-communicable diseases and universal health coverage as part of global health priorities.

He called for BRICS to be a beacon of solidarity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strategic collaboration for sustainable and inclusive development, aligning with long-term national and global visions including COP-30 and Nigeria’s 2050 agenda.
