Three Nigerians based in the United States, U.S, could be looking at 60 years in jail for money laundering allegations. The sentences are yet to be pronounced, however, the case against them, which relates to a $4.5m money laundering operation, appears compelling.

All three, Olumide Olorunfunmi, Samson Amos, and Emmanuel Unuigbe, pleaded guilty at a federal court in Charlotte.

Amos and Unuigbe acknowledged their cash consignment roles as well as money laundering conspiracy.

Police Investigation and Prosecution Review

A thorough investigation of the activities of these defendants unearthed huge amounts of illegitimate cash transactions.

The trio were co-conspirators at the heart of the crime and illegal activities to inflict financial losses on victims and launder ill-gotten gains.

They exploited and extracted money from victims, most of whom are elderly, through romantic gestures and scam business email.

Between 2020 and 2023, cash was gathered from deposits made by victims in various U.S. and international bank accounts owned or managed by Amos, Unuigbe and Olorunfunmi, the defendants.

The trio further benefited from an illicit exchange rate operation within the black market in Nigeria. This fraud is characterized by lies and the intent to leverage compromised information to trap the lonely and insecure. The kind coated in the promise of a romantic partners, yet it only produces fraud.

According to the report from the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, they now await sentencing.
