CNG and Electric Vehicles Expected to Cut Transport Costs as Nigeria Intensifies Push

If successfully implemented, the nationwide expansion of CNG and electric mobility could mark one of the most significant shifts in Nigeria’s transportation sector in decades, potentially reshaping how millions of Nigerians move people and goods across the country.

Nigeria is accelerating the transition to cleaner and more affordable transportation as the government expands the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) to promote nationwide adoption of gas-powered and electric vehicles.

The programme, championed by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to reduce transportation costs for Nigerians while lessening the country’s reliance on petrol amid rising global fuel prices.

Officials say the renewed push comes as international petroleum markets face pressure from geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, which have contributed to volatility in global fuel prices and increased energy costs worldwide.

Expanding Cleaner Transport Alternatives

Under the initiative, the government plans to expand the deployment of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric mobility solutions across Nigeria’s transportation sector.

The rollout targets multiple segments of the industry like public transport buses, taxis and ride-hailing vehicles, tricycles and commercial logistics and delivery fleets.

The initiative is designed to provide more affordable alternatives to petrol and diesel, easing the burden of rising transport fares on households and businesses.

According to the programme’s leadership, the expansion will support a broader transition toward cleaner energy use in mobility while improving accessibility to cheaper transport options.

Infrastructure and Vehicle Conversion Plans

As part of the expansion strategy, the government is ramping up vehicle conversion programmes and infrastructure development across the country.

The Tinubu administration recently directed the deployment of about 100,000 CNG conversion kits to enable motorists convert petrol-powered vehicles to gas, a move expected to significantly reduce fuel costs for commercial drivers and private vehicle owners.

Officials say the initiative is also accelerating the development of CNG refuelling stations and electric vehicle charging infrastructure nationwide to support the growing adoption of alternative-energy vehicles.

Growing Adoption Across Nigeria

Early results from the programme indicate growing uptake across the country’s transport sector.

Government data shows that more than 100,000 vehicles have already been converted to run on compressed natural gas, with hundreds of conversion centres and CNG infrastructure projects expanding across multiple states.

The broader target of the initiative is to have at least one million vehicles powered by natural gas by 2027, either through conversions or factory-fitted vehicles.

Part of Wider Energy and Economic Reforms

The transition to gas-powered and electric mobility forms part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal while promoting cleaner and more sustainable energy use.

Policy analysts say the push could help lower transport fares, reduce fuel imports, and create new jobs in vehicle conversion and energy infrastructure, while positioning Nigeria as a leader in alternative transport energy within Africa.
