U.S. President Donald Trump is reshuffling global trading systems with the institution of a base tariff of 10% and, for select nations, an additional “reciprocal tariff” on goods coming into the U.S.

Almost all trade partners will have to face these charges that are based on the White House’s evaluation of “tariffs charged against the U.S.” More so, the White House has taken currency manipulation and trade barriers into consideration in its evaluations.

Tariffs are additional tax charges placed on goods imported from other countries. Globally, tariffs are guided by pre-defined policies that keep trade going. However, President Trump insists that the existing systems applied by some countries have been ripping off U.S. taxpayers. The centuries-old system of tariffs on global trade is going to be permanently altered starting 5 April.

Experts on the topic are calling this deviation a disaster, but President Trump calls it “Liberation Day”.The White House released a list of approximately 100 countries and the proposed tariff rates for each.

Nigeria is not one of the worst-hit countries like those that have to export automobiles to the U.S. However, the 14% for Nigeria is going to change a lot for the country and its neighbours who are currently in a crisis over closed borders.

This will likely slow down business for all the other 19 African Nations, and it is easy to see why, as many traders are almost unable to make minimal profits from existing tariffs.

Exports from Africa are backed up by the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The act was signed into law by Bill Clinton in 2000, with tariff-free trading in mind. Eligible African countries are allowed to trade certain goods with the U.S. tariff-free to enhance economic growth and job creation on the continent.

Countries in Africa are still grappling with the new Trump policy that cut foreign aid globally.

The new tariff is going to squeeze small businesses in Nigeria into a corner. Many of them are starting to call out in fear. News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that small businesses may not be able to afford the new expenses attached to exports of goods from Nigeria to the U.S.

A business owner told NAN that changes like this have the tendency to increase smuggling activities. All countries affected by the tariffs are responding differently.
