Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82. According to his former presidential spokesman Garba Shehu, Buhari passed away in a hospital in London.
Buhari served as a military general in the 1980s and was elected president twice after Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999. His military government was overthrown in 1985 by then-General Ibrahim Babangida.
Buhari died two years after leaving office in 2023, having served as president from 2015 to 2023.
He will be buried according to Islamic rites, with politicians and key figures expected to pay their respects to his family.
President Tinubu has instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the UK to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria for burial.
