INEC Realigns 2027 Election Timetable Following New Electoral Act
The new legal timetable and procedures under the Electoral Act 2026 prompted INEC to realign its electoral schedule for the 2027 polls. Opposition parties have criticized some provisions as objectionable and called for fresh amendments, arguing the reforms may not fully reflect public expectations for transparency.
INEC Election Dates 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections. This follows the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026.
The new law introduces adjustments to statutory timelines governing pre-election procedures and other electoral activities, prompting the commission to review and realign its schedule to ensure full compliance with the updated legal framework.
In a statement released by the commission, INEC confirmed that the presidential and National Assembly elections will now be held on Saturday, January 16, 2027.
The governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have been scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2027.
According to the commission, the revised timetable reflects its commitment to upholding the provisions of the new Electoral Act while ensuring adequate preparation time for political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
INEC reassured Nigerians of its readiness to conduct free, fair, and credible elections in line with constitutional and statutory requirements.
The commission urged political parties and prospective candidates to carefully study the new timelines and adjust their activities accordingly, emphasizing that strict adherence to the revised schedule would be enforced.
Background of Repeal and Re-enactment Process
The Electoral Act 2022, which had governed Nigeria’s electoral framework, was formally repealed and replaced with a new law titled the Electoral Act 2026.
The new law was passed by both chambers of the National Assembly and subsequently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu to avoid any legal uncertainties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lawmakers described the move as a legal consolidation and refinement of the electoral framework intended to strengthen the integrity, efficiency, and transparency of Nigeria’s elections.
