The Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC are strengthening their partnership to protect critical oil and gas infrastructure. During a visit to the NNPC CEO, Engr. Bayo Ojulari, the Chief of the Air Staff, CAS, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke highlighted the importance of securing the system.
Multinational oil companies, like the NNPC, have often been targets of crude or refined oil theft.
Oil theft is larger than just a local issue of small-scale pipeline ruptures. Nigeria has reportedly lost billions of dollars to oil theft, with estimates ranging from 200,000 to 400,000 barrels lost daily at times. The damage ripples through environment and into the economic and safety of the people.
The partnership further highlights that protecting pipelines, flow stations, offshore platforms, and other energy assets is essential for Nigeria’s economy.
It could also be a marker for national security, oil theft reduction, and support for the economic stability and growth of Nigeria as the CAS noted.
In his statements, the CAS listed previous efforts of the NAF, working hand in hand with security agencies, to significantly cut oil theft. He said that, the outcome can be seen in the increased national output.
More so, he pointed out the need to intensify these gains by incorporating and coordinating technological advances from all stakeholders.
According the CAS, the Air Force is increasing its intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to better detect and respond to threats. Stronger collaboration between NAF, NNPC, and other security agencies will improve maritime and coastal security he hinted.
The CAS reassured the NNPC of the NAF’s committment to working closely to protect vital oil and gas infrastructure across Nigeria.
