Nigerian Polytechnics to Introduce National Diploma Curriculum in Artificial Intelligence

The objective should not be to produce thousands of Nigerians who hold diplomas in Artificial Intelligence. It should be to produce thousands who can actually build, evaluate and responsibly apply it.

Nigeria is developing a National Diploma curriculum in Artificial Intelligence as education authorities seek to equip polytechnic students with skills required for a rapidly changing technology-driven economy.

The National Board for Technical Education is spearheading development of the curriculum with other technology and education stakeholders. The initiative follows the development of an existing Higher National Diploma pathway in Artificial Intelligence.

Education officials concluded that relying primarily on students entering the HND programme from conventional computer-science courses could leave substantial gaps in foundational AI knowledge. The new ND programme is therefore intended to expose students to artificial intelligence from the beginning of their polytechnic education.

The NBTE also wants technology-related curricula reviewed more frequently because of the speed at which fields such as artificial intelligence are developing. Rather than waiting for a traditional five-year curriculum cycle, officials suggested AI programmes may require review approximately every two years.

The board believes the initiative could increase the number of Nigerians possessing advanced and commercially relevant AI skills. Officials also argued that exposure to artificial intelligence should extend beyond students specialising directly in the technology. Polytechnic graduates across disciplines should possess at least a foundational understanding of AI and how it applies within their respective professions.

The curriculum is expected to contribute to efforts to close Nigeria’s digital-skills gap and prepare graduates for emerging areas of the global economy.

Introducing Artificial Intelligence at ND Level

There is a strong case in Nigeria for introducing artificial intelligence at National Diploma level. The existing gap between ND Computer Science and specialised HND AI training makes a dedicated foundation particularly reasonable.

The NBTE is also correct that a technology developing this quickly cannot be managed through slow curriculum-review cycles.

But creating the curriculum is only the beginning. Nigeria now needs qualified lecturers, computing infrastructure, industry partnerships, rigorous accreditation, practical projects, ethical training and continuous curriculum updates.

If those elements accompany the programme, Nigerian polytechnics could become an important source of practical AI talent. If they do not, institutions could end up teaching one of the technologies defining the 21st century with 20th-century educational infrastructure.
