Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian citizen and former city councillor in Finland, could be extradited to face charges in his home country, Nigeria, for pro-Biafra activism.

Ekpa was arrested in Finland in November 2024 for allegedly spreading separatist propaganda on social media. More so, Finnish authorities believe they have enough reasonable evidence to suspect that Ekpa has terrorist intentions. They are making a legal claim based on that.

The Finnish Deputy Prosecutor General, who handles his case, will decide whether to pursue charges for the crimes he committed within its borders.

The Nigerian Government has been unsuccessful in making a deal with the Finnish government for the extradition of Simon Ekpa. However, the FG lists him among 17 sanctioned individuals whose accounts are frozen on alleged terrorism.

In a recent announcement by Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said that the FG is in talks with the Finnish authorities to extradite Ekpa.

More so, he explains Simon Ekpa’s crime level and that he is being investigated in Finland for suspected terrorist activities.

Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra activist and supporter of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He is also the leader of the secessionist group called the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), a breakaway faction of IPOB.

Despite its failed attempts, the FG still hopes that the Finnish government will extradite Simon Ekpa.

Kaarle Gummerus, Ekpa’s lawyer confirms that that case will go to court in June 2025, the BBC says. Gummerus said nothing about Finland extraditing Simon Ekpa to Nigeria.
