The National Assembly (NASS) of Nigeria is undertaking a comprehensive review of the 1999 Constitution, aiming to address longstanding demands for reforms.
More so, to adapt the legal framework to current realities. This process is part of ongoing efforts that have seen the Constitution amended five times since 1999.
NASS has announced it will transmit the final report of the ongoing constitution review to all 36 state Houses of Assembly before December 2025.
This is in line with its legislative timetable and is intended to ensure the process does not conflict with upcoming electoral activities.
The review included zonal public hearings across the country, with the most recent held in Lagos in early July 2025.
These hearings gathered input from citizens, civil society, and stakeholders on key constitutional issues.
After the public hearings, the committees are preparing their harmonized report in Abuja.
Once finalized, the report will be sent to the state assemblies for consideration.
After submission, state assemblies will debate and vote on the proposals.
Amendments that receive the necessary support will be returned to NASS and then sent to the President for assent.
The proposed amendments are expected to bring significant changes to Nigeria’s governance structure, promote inclusivity, and address long-standing demands for decentralization and electoral reform.
