The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) released the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) for 2025 on Tuesday, February 4, at the presentation of the yearly climatic forecast in Abuja.
The purpose of the event was conveyed with its theme “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” as critical climate data were discussed.
Farmers across Nigeria were advised by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo to leverage the annual SCP as their operations are rainfall-dependent.
The NiMet SCP is a comprehensive instrument that provides valuable data on the climate to the benefit of the agricultural sector.
It prepares farmers for the planting season and enlightens them on production losses, a major cause of hunger in Nigeria. In 2024, around 1.1 million tonnes of maize, sorghum and rice amounting to almost US $1 billion were lost to flooding. This number could feed 13 million people for a year.
The predictions for hunger and food scarcity in Nigeria show that 5.1 million Nigerians will suffer hunger and starvation. This prediction could empower farmers with the knowledge they need to avoid losses due to adverse weather conditions, droughts, and floods.
The full details were covered in a previous article here.
The SCP forecasts for the start and end dates of the rainy season are vital in several operations throughout the country
They are crucial for guiding agricultural practices and ensuring food security. More so, the NiMet SCP forecast on expected rainfall volume and temperature patterns are essential to aviation, disaster risk management, health, and water resources management, marine operations and transportation.
The 2025 SCP predicts that several state in the coastal region of the country will experience significantly early rainfall at the onset of the year
These states are also most likely to experience flash floods during May and June 2025 due to heavy rains. The middle belt of Nigeria and several states in the north will have a delayed rainy season and most will will see an early finish to the season.
The rainy season is predicted to linger in the riverine and coastal cities but also in some parts of the north.
