The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has adopted a fake drug detection tool it calls the GreenBook. This is a platform that allows pharmaceutical products to be verified digitally in real-time.
This is a huge step in the quest to combat fake, substandard and falsified drugs in Nigeria as the issue continues to plague it. The idea of a technological drug system is to create a safe and efficient network of medical products for the public.
More so, a system designed to track pharmaceutical products from manufacturers to end-users will further enhance transparency in the drug supply chain.
The use of technological systems is part of its commission to protect public health as the NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye noted.
The Nigeria Pharmaceutical Traceability Strategy also has a five-year traceability implementation plan, for the enhancement of supply chain visibility.
NAFDAC Makes Appeal To Sentence Defaulters For Life
The NAFDAC has also made stern moves to enforce death penalties and life sentence laws in place for offenders in Nigeria.
During a recent nationwide crackdown, with a joint task force, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, Adeyeye presented her case in these words; “We use this opportunity to call on the National Assembly to expedite the amendment of NAFDAC ACT N.1 LFN and Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods C34 ACT to include life sentence and death penalty in the penalties for crimes committed under these ACTS.”
This apparently seems to anger criminal syndicates profiting from drug peddling in the country.
The Director-General of the NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, alleges that this fight against counterfeit drugs has invited unwanted threats to her life.
The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, is calling on the President to fortify security around Adeyeye.
