Security sources have said that suspected Islamist fighters carried out major attacks on an army base and a military outpost in the Wajiroko area of northeastern Borno State. The attack claimed at least 15 lives, about four of which are soldiers, as reported by Reuters.
This area is infested with Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters. They attack security forces and civilians, kill and displace tens of thousands of people.
In the latest assault, an army base in Borno State was attacked at about 2100 GMT on Monday and military equipment was set on fire.
One of the soldiers in the brigade said that the commander and several others were left injured.
The Nigerian army has not commented on the attack, however, a witness said that air force fighter jets were there as reinforcements and many of the ISWAP fighters were killed.
A source also confirmed to Reuters that there were militants in a military outpost in the village of Wulgo, about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) from the Cameroonian border town of Fotokol between midnight and 3 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
Cameroon’s army spokesperson Cyrille Serge Atonfack Guemo confirmed the attack in Wulgo.
Boko Haram and ISWAP are in constant battle with the military in the Borno axis. Their reach and capabilities have constantly been cut short by military assaults, but they reinforce and return with different methods.
