The United States and Nigeria have officially launched the working group meetings of the United States–Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership (CIP).

This marks a significant shift in their bilateral relationship from traditional aid to a focus on commercial engagement and investment.

The landmark partnership is established under a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in July 2024 by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and Nigeria’s former Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole.

The CIP aims to deepen bilateral commercial cooperation and expand economic opportunities in both countries by addressing key sectors such as agriculture, the digital economy, and infrastructure.

Senior representatives from both governments and private sector leaders convened in Abuja to launch the working groups.

The stipulated tasks includes identifying and overcoming non-tariff barriers and investment constraints that hinder business growth.

U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria Richard M. Mills, Jr., who considers the CIP one of the top priorities of his tenure, emphasized the partnership’s role in fostering economic growth and creating opportunities that benefit citizens of both nations.

He described the CIP as a cornerstone of his diplomatic mission, reflecting the United States’ strong commitment to enhancing trade and investment ties with Nigeria.

Dr. Jumoke Oduwole highlighted the CIP’s importance as a tool for unlocking trade and investment potential, promoting regulatory reform, private sector engagement, innovation, and inclusive economic growth.

The partnership aims to accelerate job creation and develop actionable policy recommendations to address core challenges in the targeted sectors.

The CIP working groups, composed of members from both countries’ private sectors and government officials, have begun their work with a focus on actionable outcomes.

The next formal meeting is scheduled for Fall 2025, with progress assessments planned twice a year.

This initiative places Nigeria among only five African countries selected for such a strategic commercial and investment agreement with the United States.

It further underscores the importance of Nigeria as a key partner in the region and signals a new era of mutual prosperity driven by trade and investment rather than traditional aid.
