The Unpredictable Dynamics and Consensus Challenges Within BRICS Could be Volatile

Countries like Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Egypt have recently been given seats at the BRICS, joining alongside traditional members like South Africa.

However, the growing membership of BRICS is a double-edged sword.

As the BRICS grouping expands to include more countries from diverse regions, the coalition has become more globally representative.

This broader representation is a positive development, reflecting the increasing importance of emerging economies across Africa, Asia, and Latin America in global affairs.

However, this inclusivity also brings significant challenges in reaching consensus, which is fundamental to BRICS’ effectiveness as a cooperative bloc.

A recent example illustrating this difficulty occurred during the foreign ministers’ meeting just a few months ago.

For the first time, BRICS was unable to issue a joint communiqué due to disagreements among African member states regarding the language on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reform.

The Price of Diversity for BRICS

Traditionally, South Africa has been the sole African country cited as a candidate for a permanent seat on the UNSC within BRICS statements.

However, the African members could not agree on which country or countries should be acknowledged in the communiqué. With the addition of Ethiopia and Egypt, both also aspire to permanent membership. This dispute stalled the consensus process and prevented the release of a unified statement.

This incident underscores a broader challenge. As BRICS grows more diverse, the complexity of balancing competing national interests increases.

Each member country brings its own priorities, ambitions, and regional considerations, which can slow decision-making and dilute the group’s agility.

The inability to quickly align on sensitive political issues such as UNSC reform reveals the tensions inherent in a larger, more heterogeneous coalition.

While the expansion enhances BRICS’ legitimacy as a global voice for emerging economies, it also demands more nuanced diplomacy and compromise. The bloc must navigate internal rivalries and divergent perspectives to maintain cohesion.

If unresolved, these challenges risk undermining BRICS’ ability to act decisively on key international issues, potentially diminishing its influence on the global stage.

The growing membership strengthens the group’s representativeness but complicates consensus-building. This makes the coalition less agile and more cautious in its collective actions.

Moving forward, BRICS will need to develop more sophisticated mechanisms for conflict resolution and inclusive dialogue to harness the full potential of its expanded membership.
