US Cuts Visa Validity for Most Nigerian Applicants

Starting July 8, the United States is implementing new visa restrictions for Nigerian citizens. Most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerians are now limited to single-entry and are valid for only three months.
This is a significant departure from previous policies, which typically allowed multiple entries over two years or more.
This change is part of a global visa policy realignment based on reciprocity—Nigeria already issues similar short-term visas to U.S. citizens.
The U.S. says visa rules are under continuous review and depend on diplomatic and security benchmarks. It is also working with Nigeria to meet international standards, including better travel document security, management of visa overstays, and data sharing for public safety.
In addition, visa applicants’ social media accounts will be reviewed for signs of hostility toward the U.S.
Nigeria has not yet responded to the changes. Notably, Nigerians are among the top applicants for U.S. student visas.
Most Nigerian applicants for non-immigrant US visas, including those seeking to travel for business, tourism, study, or short-term work, will be affected.
Diplomatic and official visas may be subject to different rules, but most standard applicants are affected.
Existing visa holders retain their original validity and terms.
The U.S. New Visa Policy for Nigeria
The U.S. government described the move as part of its global visa reciprocity process. This process ensures that US visa policies reflect the treatment American citizens receive from other countries.
In this case, Nigeria issues single-entry, three-month visas to US citizens, prompting the US to match those terms for Nigerian nationals.
The US Department of State cited several key factors behind the policy update. Reciprocity is the major factor as it aligns visa terms with those offered to US citizens by Nigeria. Security standards also play a part in the new police to ensure that countries issue secure travel documents with verified identities.
Other issues cited include visa overstay.
The new policy would require countries to share relevant security and criminal record information to protect public safety.
Old Visa Policy (Pre-July 8, 2025) vs New Visa Policy (From July 8, 2025)
Multiple entries, up to 2+ years — Single entry, 3 months
Longer-term business, tourism, and study visas — Short-term visits only
Less stringent reciprocity with Nigeria — Strict reciprocity with Nigeria
