A report from 1905, described a devastating famine sweeping through the Upper Benue region of Northern Nigeria. According to the report, the food shortage had become so severe that it resulted in widespread deaths and drove families to desperate measures.

The newspaper claimed that many young children were sold in exchange for food as starvation tightened its grip on affected communities. It added that colonial authorities had reportedly taken custody of about 200 of the children with the intention of returning them to their families.
