PAYPAL RETURNS TO NIGERIA WITH PAGA COOPERATION LAUNCHES LIVE ACCOUNT LINKING
2 days ago
Industry observers say the move could boost Nigeria’s freelance economy, support small exporters and digital entrepreneurs, and reduce reliance on informal or high-cost channels for receiving international payments, further integrating the country into the global digital payments landscape.

PayPal Paga Account Linking
Nigerian fintech company Paga and global payments giant PayPal have announced the launch of live account linking for customers in Nigeria. This enables users to access PayPal-supported cross-border payments directly through Paga’s digital wallet.
With the integration now live, Nigerian users can receive international payments via PayPal and seamlessly withdraw those funds in naira through their Paga accounts, marking a significant step in expanding access to global digital payments for individuals and businesses in the country.
Under the partnership, users can link their PayPal accounts to their Paga wallets, allowing them to receive payments from PayPal-supported markets, shop with global merchants, and access funds locally. Nigerian merchants, freelancers and entrepreneurs can also leverage the integration to reach PayPal’s global network of over 400 million users, opening new opportunities for cross-border trade and digital commerce.
PayPal Payment Solution in Nigeria
Through Paga’s platform, users are able to withdraw PayPal balances, spend via card, transfer funds to local bank accounts. More so, they will be able to pay bills within the Paga ecosystem, offering a more flexible and localised way to use international earnings.
Paga’s Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer, Tayo Oviosu, said the collaboration was designed to simplify access to global funds while meeting the realities of Nigeria’s financial environment.
“We are proud to make this integration live and available to users across Nigeria,” Oviosu said. “Whether you’re a freelancer receiving international payments, a business selling online, or a consumer shopping globally, this collaboration makes it easier to access and use global funds locally, in a way that’s simple, secure, and built for our markets.”
The development is particularly significant given PayPal’s long-standing limitations in Nigeria. In the early 2000s, PayPal restricted Nigerian accounts from receiving funds, allowing only outbound international payments due to rising fraud concerns.
While PayPal has yet to fully open its platform to Nigeria, the integration with Paga provides users with practical access to PayPal services through a regulated local wallet.
Commenting on the partnership, PayPal’s Senior Vice President, Regional Head and General Manager for the Middle East and Africa, Otto Williams, said the collaboration reflects PayPal’s strategy of working with local innovators to deepen financial inclusion.
“We’ve been intentional about partnering with local innovators like Paga and developing solutions that help Nigerians earn, spend, and grow,” Williams said. “This collaboration helps strengthen the broader payments ecosystem by supporting local innovation, expanding financial inclusion, and enabling more consumers and businesses to participate confidently in the digital economy.”
