UNHARMED BUT TRAUMATIZED AS THE WELFARE OF THE RETURNED KIDNAPPED GIRLS IS QUESTIONED
2 months ago
Twenty-four schoolgirls kidnapped from their boarding school in Kebbi State were reunited with authorities and families this week following a security operation.
The Niger school girls kidnap is prompting authorities to crank up security efforts. The girls appear largely unharmed but there is chance the trauma they experienced will go untreated with the record of Nigeria’s health system.

A Kidnapped School Girl in Nigeria
While others remain caged, some of the kidnapped girls from Kebbi State in Nigeria have been confirmed freed and located. It is more appropriate to presume that the girls are unharmed, however, the full picture health, psychological wellbeing, follow-up remains uncertain.
Unharmed for now seems to refer to lack of overt injury without taking into account their mental condition.
Parents and school staff continue to experience anxiety for still-missing students from other recent mass kidnappings. The trauma associated with these attacks remains high among those affected.
Reports indicate great relief from authorities and families over their safe return, ignoring any efforts to help the girls reintegrate.
Nigerian School Girls’ Kidnapping
While these Kebbi girls have been freed, hundreds of schoolchildren and teachers remain unaccounted for after recent incidents in Niger State.
Given the nature of such kidnapping, even if there are no visible physical injuries, there may be longer-term psychological effects or other non-visible harm. The state of their health is relative to the duration, stress, potential trauma and unknown conditions during captivity.
In broader context, this abductions comes as part of a surge in mass kidnappings of schoolchildren in Nigeria in the North of Nigeria. It further exposes systemic security failures around school protection.
Authorities are increasing security and have promised ongoing operations to return all abductees safely and prevent further incidents.
Whether the returned girls experienced injuries or other harm, and the focus is largely on their release rather than their health status.
Human-rights watch and other organizations have called for urgent rescue efforts and better protection of schools
