While 5,000 cameras might secure Jos city, they do not address the underlying “indigene-settler” disputes.

Experts say, the deployment of 5,000 AI-integrated cameras is a modern “Smart City” approach to security and a serious strategic proposal for Nigeria’s security architecture. AI surveillance is highly effective in dense urban environments (like Jos North) for tracking suspects, identifying license plates, and monitoring crowd behavior. However, the violence in Plateau State often occurs in remote, mountainous, or forested rural areas where there is no power grid and limited cellular backhaul.

The greatest failure in Nigerian security has rarely been a lack of information, but rather a lack of response. 5,000 cameras will generate a staggering amount of data.

Unless there is a 24/7 Command and Control Center (C4I) staffed by highly trained analysts and a rapid-response force that can reach a crime scene in minutes, the cameras will merely provide high-definition footage of tragedies after they have occurred.
