The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is gaining renewed prominence as major opposition figures—including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar—adopted it as their coalition platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

This coalition was formed to unify opposition forces that were previously divided, aiming to present a stronger front against the ruling party.

It further represents a strategic realignment in Nigerian politics, aiming to unify disparate opposition forces under one banner to provide a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership focused on the welfare of Nigerians.

Formation and Leadership of the Coalition on July 2, 2025, key opposition figures formally adopted the ADC as their coalition platform at an event held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

The coalition appointed Distinguished Senator David Mark as the interim National Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, former governor of Osun State, as the National Secretary.

These appointments are seen as a strategic balance of experience, credibility, and national representation.

Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, publicly reaffirmed his support for the coalition and the adoption of the ADC.

He described the decision as the product of “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s current challenges and the urgent need for a new direction.

Obi emphasized that the coalition’s commitment is to sacrifice and work together to ensure Nigeria gets leadership that prioritizes the nation’s future and the welfare of its people.

Obi’s Vision and Call for Unity Obi has framed the coalition as a bridge to a new Nigeria, stressing that no single group can change the country alone.

He called for building “bridges, not walls,” even when those bridges are uneasy, underscoring the importance of collaboration among opposition forces to dismantle poverty and insecurity.

Obi’s rhetoric marks a shift from partisan politics to a more mature coalition-building approach, focusing on unity, empathy, and shared national responsibility.

He stated, “A New Nigeria is Possible,” turning his 2023 campaign slogan into a rallying cry for the coalition’s broader movement.

His excitement is not only about winning power but about reimagining governance as a service to the people.

Coalition Composition and Political Dynamics Besides Obi and Atiku Abubakar, the coalition includes influential figures such as former Senate President David Mark, former Tinubu ally turned critic Nasir El-Rufai, and former minister Rotimi Amaechi.

Analysts suggest this alliance strengthens the opposition’s chances compared to the 2023 election, where Obi and Atiku ran separately.

However, the coalition has faced criticism from the ruling party and some Labour Party members.

The presidency dismissed the coalition as an alliance of “displaced politicians” driven by personal ambition rather than national interest.

The Labour Party issued an ultimatum for Obi to formally resign, with some party officials denouncing the coalition as a gathering of “power-hungry individuals.”

The 2027 Election Outlook Political analysts are divided on the coalition’s prospects.

Some believe the united opposition stands a better chance against Tinubu, who is seeking re-election, while others argue the incumbent president’s advantage as a sitting leader remains strong.
