The government in Nigeria is taking the safety and well-being of citizens stranded around the world seriously as it initiates discussions to return them home.

At least 15,000 Nigerians in Cameroon, Niger, Chad and around the world without substantial livelyhood will have to opportunity to return and restart their lives.

NAN reports that Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), addressed the media on Friday in Abuja.

Ahmed revealed that these 15,000 Nigerians want to return to the country voluntarily. More so, they are a fraction of the six million people displaced within Nigeria and thousands of refugees living elsewhere across the world.

He upholds the decisions of the commission by saying that, similarly, there are over 100,000 foreigners living in Nigeria as refugees and that its job is to provide support.

While at it, Ahmed disclosed that Nigeria would be hosting its first thematic meeting since assuming chairmanship of the Rabat Process. Over 100 delegates from the 57 partner countries are expected to attend.

The meeting at the Rabat Process – a Euro-African dialogue on migration and development – is scheduled for May 13 and May 14 with the theme, “Youth, Innovation and Education: Driving the Future of Migration.”

The commission further talks about the dangers of illegal migration pathways and the need for adequate advocacy to warn younger generations of the issue.

Bilateral discussions between Nigeria and other countries for better migration governance will be at the forefront when he meeting begins.
