The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced measures to ease admission-related difficulties for candidates, including allowing them to change registered phone numbers and email addresses, improve access to admission records and align personal details with their National Identification Number (NIN).
The reforms were outlined by the board’s Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede’s successor, Professor S. A. O. [name not clearly established in the supplied transcript], during an interview on the Nigerian Television Authority’s Good Morning Nigeria programme.
According to JAMB officials, more than 50,000 candidates applied to change their registered phone numbers or email addresses within the first five days of the service becoming available.
The initiative is intended to help candidates who have lost access to their registered SIM cards or email accounts, particularly those unable to complete admission-related processes because they can no longer access their JAMB profiles.
Candidates seeking to change their registered contact details can visit a JAMB office or an accredited computer-based test (CBT) centre. The fee stated during the programme was ₦5,000.
JAMB Strengthens CAPS Admission Monitoring
The board reaffirmed that admissions into tertiary institutions must be processed and recognised through its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
JAMB Registrar Professor S. A. O. [name to be confirmed] explained that institutions propose and recommend candidates for admission, while JAMB verifies that the required admission criteria have been met and formally recognises the placement.
The registrar warned that candidates admitted outside the approved process risk having their admissions declared invalid, with potentially serious consequences for their academic and professional futures, including difficulties with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation.
The discussion cited previous cases involving thousands of unapproved admissions. In July 2025, 20 institutions reportedly accounted for more than 9,000 admissions outside CAPS, while 17 universities, polytechnics and colleges of education were implicated in more than 2,600 cases in November 2025.
JAMB said it would continue monitoring institutional compliance, engaging affected institutions and applying sanctions where necessary.
Candidates Get Better Visibility Into Admission Progress
JAMB is also improving transparency by allowing candidates to see more clearly where their admission applications stand within the CAPS process.
The stages include when an institution proposes a candidate, recommends the application, receives JAMB’s approval and when the candidate accepts the offer.
According to the registrar, the changes are intended to reduce uncertainty, improve accountability and help candidates understand what is happening while admission decisions are being processed.
Candidates who have received JAMB-recognised admission but encounter difficulties with their institutions are advised to submit complaints through the board’s official website. JAMB said it would investigate such cases and work with the relevant institutions to resolve administrative problems.
NIN Alignment and Online O’Level Uploads
The board has also introduced a process for aligning JAMB profiles with corrected identity details held by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Candidates can update their details with NIMC before seeking to align their JAMB records, a development the registrar said would help people previously unable to proceed with admission because of discrepancies in their personal information.
In addition, candidates can upload their O’Level results through their JAMB profiles by purchasing a verification code and following the instructions on the platform. The process is designed to reduce the need to visit JAMB offices or CBT centres for this particular service.
JAMB Considers Life Skills and Critical Thinking in UTME
Beyond admission administration, the board is considering changes to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The registrar disclosed that a committee had been established to examine the possible introduction of life skills and critical-thinking assessment into the examination.
He explained that the review is partly intended to examine the gap between academic qualifications and the practical skills employers require. However, the proposal remains under consideration and should not be interpreted as a confirmed change to the current UTME format.
