A Nigerian man, Kehinde Oluwagbemileke, who was fighting for the Russian military in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, has been captured by Ukrainian forces.
Kehinde, 29, had been living in Russia for four years before his arrest on drug-related charges. To avoid a prison sentence under Article 228 of the Russian Criminal Code, he agreed to join Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine in exchange for a reduced sentence.
The young man had been serving with Russian troops for five months before he was captured in the Zaporizhzhia region.
He was apprehended by the Freedom of Russia Legion. This unit is composed of Russian fighters aligned with Ukraine, as part of Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” project, which assists Russian soldiers and foreign fighters in surrendering.
The project described Kehinde as one of thousands of mercenaries from third countries recruited by Russia’s Defense Ministry to fight in Ukraine.
It noted that nearly 7,000 foreign fighters from 14 countries have been documented. However, this is only a fraction of the foreigners the Kremlin has sent to the front lines, often treating them as expendable manpower.
In a video released by the Freedom of Russia Legion, Kehinde expressed deep regret and said his family in Nigeria was unaware that he had gone to war.
He joined the Russian forces seeking a “quick liberation” from prison.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned foreign nationals against joining Russian forces, urging them to avoid recruitment and instead contact the “I Want to Live” project for assistance.
