UK Universities Withdraw Admission Offers as Student Visa Restrictions Hit Nigerian Applicants

Some universities in the UK have also reportedly paused recruitment from particular countries for the January 2027 intake, raising further questions about the availability of study opportunities for affected applicants.

Nigerian students seeking admission to UK universities are facing growing uncertainty as student visa application withdrawals rise sharply, prompting concerns that universities are tightening their recruitment processes to protect their licences to sponsor international students.

The withdrawal rate for Nigerian student visa applications reportedly rose to 22.7 per cent in the first half of 2026, compared with 4.5 per cent during the same period in 2025, according to figures attributed to an analysis of UK Home Office data by the Financial Times.

The development comes amid tighter UK government scrutiny of international student recruitment and concerns over visa compliance, placing additional pressure on universities that depend on international enrolment. For prospective Nigerian students, the situation could mean greater scrutiny before admission offers are confirmed, delays in securing the documentation needed for visa applications, and the possibility of losing a university place before completing the application process.

Why UK Universities Are Reconsidering Admissions for Nigerians

One of the major concerns is the potential impact of student visa refusal rates on universities’ ability to recruit international students.

Under the reported policy changes, institutions face stricter expectations regarding the proportion of sponsored international students whose visa applications are refused. Universities that fail to meet the relevant requirements could face regulatory consequences, including restrictions on their ability to sponsor overseas students.

This has encouraged some institutions to adopt more cautious recruitment procedures, particularly when assessing applicants from countries experiencing increased visa refusals.

Rather than waiting for a visa decision, some universities are reportedly reviewing applications more aggressively and withdrawing offers where they believe an applicant may struggle to satisfy the relevant immigration requirements.

Such decisions can leave prospective students in a difficult position, particularly those who have already paid application fees, deposits or other expenses associated with preparing to study in the UK. However, a rise in visa application withdrawals does not, by itself, establish that every withdrawal was initiated by a university or that all affected applicants were refused visas. Individual circumstances and the reasons for each withdrawal may differ.

The reported figures suggest that the trend extends beyond Nigeria, with applicants from other South Asian countries also experiencing substantial increases in student visa application withdrawals.

According to the figures cited in the report, Pakistan’s withdrawal rate rose from 3 per cent in the first half of 2025 to 40.9 per cent in the corresponding period of 2026. Bangladesh’s rate increased from 7.1 per cent to 23.5 per cent. These figures indicate that universities are operating in an increasingly restrictive environment for international student recruitment, although the precise reasons for withdrawals may vary between institutions and applicant groups.
