Stakeholders have called for the strict implementation of electoral reforms as a pathway to strengthening Nigeria’s political stability and driving national development.

The call was made at the third NIMBRIS Legacy Lecture held at the University of Port Harcourt, where participants gathered to deliberate on issues of national and global importance, with particular focus on electoral integrity.

Discussion

Delivering a lecture at the event, former INEC Chairman, Professor Atayua, emphasised the need for effective strategies to promote credible elections in Nigeria. He noted that a credible electoral system remains a panacea for socio-economic growth in any democratic society.

According to him, practical approaches must be adopted to ensure elections are free, fair, and reflective of the will of the people. He stressed that reforms must not only be enacted but thoroughly implemented to achieve meaningful impact.

Guest lecturer, Professor Tahiro Jagger, in his presentation titled “Importance of a Credible Electoral System for Nigeria’s National Development,” described electoral integrity as a fundamental element for achieving broader democratic governance. He explained that elections with integrity, those based on a properly conceptualised and efficiently operated electoral system, are both necessary and desirable for Nigeria’s democratic advancement.

Professor Jagger further urged citizens to play more meaningful roles in shaping the country’s political landscape, noting that democracy thrives when voters actively participate and demand accountability.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor George Aunari, stated that the lecture series was designed to sustain a legacy of intellectual excellence, national service, and thoughtful leadership. He added that electoral integrity must span the entire electoral cycle and align with human rights principles and democratic values.

Participants at the lecture agreed that conversations around electoral reforms and the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the system remain critical as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

They encouraged Nigerians to exercise their civic responsibilities and remain committed to strengthening democratic processes in the country.
